NEW RO / RO-PAX SHIPS IN THE AZORES REQUIRES ADAPTATION OF PORTS

(Dec.2019) Studies and projects for adapting some ports in the Azores to receive the new RO / RO-PAX ships, ordered by the Regional Government, are currently underway at CONSULMAR.
These ships will join the fleet currently serving regular inter-island maritime links in the archipelago. The new RO / RO-PAX ramps will be designed to receive ships up to 118 m in length and 6 m in draft and should guarantee the operation of these ships without constraints in most wave sea states.
The definition of the best technical solution and location of the ramps in each port is supported by a study of sea waves, also seeking to ensure that the new ramps do not impair the internal water tranquillity in the respective ports.
The Development Design under preparation will also have to study and propose solutions that make the construction works viable, minimizing the restrictions to the port operation during the works.
The ports of São Roque (Pico), Vila da Praia (Graciosa), Vila do Porto (Santa Maria) and Velas and Calheta (São Jorge) benefit from this intervention.
