Porto of Leixões (Porto) – Preparing for new cargo ships
CONSULMAR has prepared for the Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo Ports Administration, S.A. the Design of the Extension of the Exterior Breakwater and the Maritime Accessibilities of the Port of Leixões, as well as the Study of the Environmental Impact.
The project is made up of two components: the Extended Outdoor Breakwater in an extension of about 300 meters and the deepening of the sea access channel, for the quota -16.85 m (ZHL), and the rotating basin with 600 m of dredged diameter up to the quota -15.5 m (ZHL).
The completion of this work will provide the conditions of safety and navigability in the access to the port of Leixões and the maneuvering area of the ships, allowing access and reception of larger cargo ships up to about 300 m long, 40m mouth and 13.5m draght and capacity about 5,000 TEU, responding to the pressing needs of growth of one of the most important ports in the country.
The project has a favorable Environmental Impact Statement issued by the Portuguese Environment Agency on August 27, 2018.
