HURRICANE LORENZO: CONSULMAR RESTORES BREAKWATER OF THE PORT OF PONTA DELGADA (SÃO MIGUEL)

(Aug. 2020) The crossing of the Azores archipelago by Hurricane Lorenzo in early October resulted in severe damage to the port infrastructure of some islands. The breakwater at the Port of Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) was one of the most affected, assuming its recovery as an emergency.
Portos dos Açores, therefore, decided to start the process of restoring the necessary port security and operational conditions, entrusting CONSULMAR the preparation of the Studies and Design Detail of the breakwater restoration.
The design solution adopted for the rehabilitation and reinforcement of the breakwater at the Ponta Delgada port consists, generally, of placing a new Antifer block armour layer over the existing one. Antifer blocks of 250 to 800kN will be applied to fill and reinforce the breakwater armour.
