Bridges Over River Giraúl, Namibe, Angola

River Giraúl runs through a desert area, flowing into the sea near the town of Namibe, capital of the province with the same name. Near its mouth, it is crossed by two road and railway bridges, serving the provincial capital. Due to the torrential nature of its regime, the short bridges spans and lack of maintenance of the flowing conditions, the strong currents, combined with dragged floating materials (tree trunks, etc.) destabilised some of the first road bridge and the railway bridge piles, causing settlement of the bridge spans and traffic cuts.

The project consisted in the reconstruction of the affected piles, which were founded on sets of micro-piles, and their bridge spans. In the case of the road bridge, some parts of the span have been removed and repositioned.

The intervention of CONSULMAR consisted in the design of the three bridges, including topo-hydrographic campaigns, geotechnical surveys, studies and design, preparation of tender documents and technical assistance to the Employer, as well as the Supervision of the works of the first road bridge.
