Protection of the Railway Cruz-quebrada – Caxias
Between Cruz-Quebrada and Caxias, in a distance of about 1.5 km, the railway line is on the bank of the mouth of the Tagus estuary, being subject to sea waves attack. On stormy days coinciding with spring tides, the trains’ circulation was in danger, and had, at times, to be stopped. CONSULMAR designed the coastal protection, with particular attention to the landscape integration of the structure, such as the limitation of its crown level to avoid obstructing the visibility, and perfect drainage of the line. The intervention consisted of a rock fill structure with a large berm width, at a low level, with access for emergency vehicles in its crest. The work also included the detailed inspection of the reinforced concrete structure of the platforms of two underpasses, and the design for its repair, including replacement of reinforcement.
