Rehabilitation of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the Beaches of Leblon, Ipanema and Arpoador, Brazil
The Rodrigues de Freitas lagoon communicates with the sea through the channel Allah implanted between the beaches of Ipanema and Leblon. The frequent silting of this channel prevents the renewal of the lake water, thus contributing to the situation of environmental degradation in which it is held. Following the request of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro LNEC prepared studies for defining the solution to this problem, and, simultaneously, to increase the capacity of the bathing beaches of Ipanema, Leblon and Arpoador. The design and the specifications of their projects has been undertaken by CONSULMAR. The works consist of two jetties guiding channel Allah, approximately 300 m long each, one jetty guiding the channel of Visconde de Albuquerque, at the end of Leblon Beach, and one groyne, around 100 m long, near Ponta do Arpoador, as well as beach nourishment with about 1 million cubic meters of dredged sand.
